Steer Wrestler Matt Reeves – 2012 NFR Qualifier

Matt Reeves is the one of three subjects of a The documentary film, Cowboy Christmas, which tracks the cross-country progress of steer wrestlers Matt Reeves, Darrell Petry and Sam Koenig over the course of a Fourth of July week. The film has made it into the semifinal stage of the ArcLight Theatres Documentary Film Festival.

He joined the PRCA in 2003.  As an amateur, Reeves won the Texas Cowboys Rodeo Association steer wrestling title in 2005.

In 2007 Reeves qualified for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. He won Round 2 of the WNFR with a time of 3.5 seconds and placed in three of the rodeo’s 10 rounds.  He was forced to miss Rounds 7 and 8 due to a concussion. Earlier in the season, Reeves won the Henderson County PRCA Stampede (Athens, Texas); the Dogwood Classic PRCA Rodeo (Palestine, Texas); the SandHills Stock Show and Rodeo (Odessa, Texas); the Matagorda County Fair & Rodeo (Bay City, Texas) and the Dodge Texas Circuit Finals Rodeo (Waco-Jan. 3-5, 2008).  He finished the year 13th in the world standings.

Reeves married barrel racer Savanah Koenig on Dec. 16, 2008. He had won the Colorado State Fair Rodeo (Pueblo, Colo.); the Elk City (Okla.) Rodeo of Champions and the Butterfield Stage Days Rodeo (Bridgeport, Texas).  He did not make the top 15 and finished 28th in the world standings with earnings of $37,138.

It was back to the Wrangler NFR in 2009.  Here  he placed in three  of the ten rounds .  That year, he also won the Dodge Texas Circuit Finals Rodeo (Waco); the Lewiston (Idaho) Roundup and the World's Oldest Rodeo (Prescott, Ariz.).  He was Co-champion at the Lea County Fair & PRCA Rodeo (Lovington, N.M.) and the Glen Rose (Texas) Pro Rodeo. Reeves finished the year 14th in the world standings with earnings of $82,481.

2010 brought a third qualification to the WNFR.  Reeves placed in three rounds of the ten rounds, including a 3.4-second run that won Round 4.  He won Rodeo Austin (Texas); the Horse Heaven Round-Up (Kennewick, Wash.); the Rooftop Rodeo (Estes Park, Colo.); the Los Fresnos (Texas) PRCA Rodeo; the Helotes (Texas) Festival Association Rodeo; the Larimer County Fair & Rodeo (Loveland, Colo.) and the Whoop-Up Days ProRodeo (Lethbridge, Alberta). He was also Co-champion of the XIT Rodeo & Reunion (Dalhart, Texas).  Matt  finished eighth in the world standings with $117,321.

2011 was a slow year.  He won the Sikeston (Mo.) Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo; the Athens (Texas) MDA Benefit Rodeo and was  Co-champion at the Mineral Wells (Texas) Rodeo.  He failed to qualify for the WNFR however, finishing  50th in the World Standings.

Not so in 2012!   He has won the Lawton (Okla.) Rangers Rodeo, the Southwestern International PRCA Rodeo (El Paso, Texas), the Sheridan WYO Rodeo, the Daines Ranch Rodeo (Innisfail, Alberta) and was Co-champion at the Spanish Fork (Utah) Fiesta Days Rodeo and  Co-champion at the Angelina County Benefit Rodeo (Lufkin, Texas).

Although Matt has Type 1 diabetes and uses an insulin pump, it sure doesn't keep hin down.  He comes into the 2012 WNFR ranked fifth in the World Standings.
